FoxSaver 2.2.4.2 released!

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions! We have been working on the website and improving FoxSaver. We may have forgotten to answer several comments, but we believe we listened and have fixed most of bugs.

We actually added a new feature: Search with a picture! OK, it's not really search via a picture, but search alongside a picture. We will show a picture from FoxSaver sources( be it from FoxSaver website, RSS feed, or your local disk pictures ) in the empty space left by Google's search page!

Let us know if you want any feature, or want any bugs fixed!

Remember to share your pictures! We like pictures that's generally nice, no manga, porn, personal stuff for now.

For now, pictures from first-time recommenders will be reviewed to get listed. If you are a good recommender, you will get your pictures automatically listed later.

Also, please let us know whether you like the Facebook account requirement. We use it to minimize spams, and encourage real users. We may setup a true FoxSaver user account system later, depending on feedbacks from you!

  • Love the screensaver!

Is there any way it could work without manually opening firefox?
Like making it the windows system default?

  • Atlas, Thanks! And your suggestion sounds very interesting indeed!

Mozilla recent renamed WebRunner to Prism, which should help to run FoxSaver directly! We haven't tried it yet. If anyone has some experience, please let us know.

  • Hi, I've been a happy FoxSaver user for some time, thanks!

    I have two suggestions/requests:

    1) Don't embed photos into Google's home page unless the user explicitly requests it. I don't normally use Google, but when I went there today and saw my own images on the front page, it gave me the creeps, especially since I couldn't figure out where they were getting the pictures. I went so far as running a network protocol analyzer to try to figure out how Google was associated my pictures with me, before I thought that maybe it was FoxSaver. It really gave me the willies.

    2) It'd be nice to have an option that disables the floating "right click to stop slide show" note. Having used FoxSaver for a long time, I no longer need the prompting, and find it distracting.

As far as requiring Facebook for submitting photos, please realize that a lot of people try to stay away from it and any "social networking site" (which is just a euphemism for "time-sucking cesspool" :-)

  • Thanks Jeffery!

Your two suggestions will be implemented in the next release. (Actually already done, just wait for the next Sunday to release it.)

You are right. Hooking up with Facebook is not really good. We are thinking to disable this login later. We did it only for the convenience to set up a user system(login, registration, etc). We are developing it now and should be available soon.

    Hi!
You have done great work at FoxSaver.my two suggestions are :
    1) I don't know why my tool bar buttons switch to small when ever I start FoxSaver , so I have every time to re set them.
2)When Full screen the message "right click to exit..." appears always on top as soon I move the mouse and hides the pictures.
    Keep going...
    ...................................

I've tried FoxSaver after a clean Firefox install with no custmization and other add-ons but the buttons still swith to small.
Wonder if you have any idea how I could fix it.

Thanx for "right click to exit..."
fix. FoxSaver gets better and better.
    Keep going...

  • why is it that a consideable amount of pix , are tilted , not square 2 the screen ?? is there a way i can adjust ??

By Anonymous Anonymous, At November 11, 2007 11:51 AM

  • Thanks for all the suggestions!

We will look into the "tool bar buttons switch to small" problem.

The tilting effects will be configurable for the next release.

  • I so love this screensaver. Is there a way I could just turn it "on" when ever I wanted to? I also like the way we can pick our pictures that we love the most.

    Thank you so much!

By Blogger Sharon, At November 11, 2007 4:30 PM

  • Sharon, thanks,

you can start playing pictures you chose on foxsaver by right click on the "FoxSaver" logon in the lower right corner, and choose "FoxSaver Start".

By Blogger Chris, At November 11, 2007 11:03 PM

  • Great plugin! But...

It does not want to show pictures from a folder I specify (on my
    server for example):

    http://192.168.2.1/photos/images/section1/Chichicastenango/slides/

Folder contains jpg files, but still it grabs the picture from your
    website or something???

Is there a way to have the slideshow to go away a soon as we move the
    mouse (behave like a screensaver?)

    Thanks for your time.

  • Hi, Claude,

The folder FoxSaver can support is local hard disk. If you really want to show pictures on the server, you can generate a RSS feed and use FoxSaver to play it.

It is possible to make FoxSaver disappear by just moving mouses. We can work on it. But this would not allow users to vote for their pictures. We need to think of a better way to do it.

By Blogger Chris, At November 13, 2007 8:19 AM

  • Ok, RSS feed.... where should I start is this a standard feed. How do you build this? Got any website suggestion?

Maybe the mouve mous to make screen disapear could be put as an option. thanks for making this great program.

    By Blogger C-F, At November 13, 2007 11:59 AM

  • Thanks.

This Media RSS feed should be a good example:
    http://vote.foxsaver.com/public/rss/published

BTW: many fields are not necessary. FoxSaver only cares about the Item>media:content part.

  • Hi, I've noticed a few problems with 2.2.4.3 that I didn't notice with earlier versions....

    * It's popping up even when I'm actively using Firefox (scrolling, typing, moving the mouse). Even worse, when I click to dismiss FoxSaver, it takes with it the tab I'd been working in. This is a huge problem.

    * When clicking on the url in the About box, it fires up a new window (I'd prefer a tab), and the About box can not be removed until the new window is also removed. That is unfortunate.

    * It'd be nice to have the home page link on the options dialog somewhere.

    Thanks,
    Jeffrey

By Anonymous Jeffrey Friedl, At November 14, 2007 9:09 PM

  • Jeffery, thanks. I understand your points for 2 and 3 and will resolve them.

This is kind of hard. If it happens, could you please take a screenshot? Preferrably also the FoxSaver option settings also. I suspect it's some kind of setting combination that's causing the problem.

  • Hello,

When I open Google web page I have not the image of foxsaver while this option is activated ?

By Anonymous gringo, At November 17, 2007 12:18 PM

  • Hi, gringo,

Sometimes I did notice the image is not showing, but it'll show after a refresh. Need to find out where is the bug.

By Blogger Chris, At November 17, 2007 6:53 PM

  • hello, would you be so kind as to tell me how to uninstall the program?
    thanks a lot

By Blogger vmul, At December 14, 2007 2:30 AM

  • vmul, the un-installation instructions are in the FAQ. thanks for trying it. Maybe let us know what you don't like FoxSaver.

  • Hi, I'm trying to make my smugmug gallery showing up inmy FoxSaver. How should I do that? I read the suggestion about "RSS-feed" but I have just a vague idea about what that is and even less knowledge on how to build it. Is this something that has to be done through SmugMugs administrators?

Another alternative would be to have FoxSaver start up the slide-show of my smugmug gallery. I have tried to type in the URL for the slideshow (http://JensBirch.smugmug.com/photos/sspopup.mg?AlbumID=3794794&AlbumKey=ZTAye)
in the FoxSaver alternatives but when I then start FoxSaver, it goes and gets the images from your website anyway... (I did un-tick "Fox-Saver photographs")

    Any help would be appreciated.

By Blogger Jens, At February 21, 2008 7:02 AM

  • Hi, Jens,
On the left bottom of your smugmug page, http://jensbirch.smugmug.com, there is a link, "available feeds". Click it to open it, there is a link, "recent photos"->"rss". This is the rss url you should copy and paste to FoxSaver.

For your case, it should be http://jensbirch.smugmug.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=nicknameRecentPhotos&Data=JensBirch&format=rss200

Let me know if it works for you.

By Blogger Chris, At February 21, 2008 8:06 AM

  • Thanks, It works!

Their feed contains only the 100 latest images but that is good enough for me at the moment.

    Fox-saver is really nice!

    Cheers, Jens.

  • When I have 2 open Firefox windows (not tabs!), FoxSaver starts displaying pictures when I am not active on the initial window for some time. It doesn't see te activity in another window and just suddenly pops up a picture. Very annoying.
    Can you fix this?

By Anonymous Rob, At March 3, 2008 7:01 AM

  • Hi, Rob,

Just prepared version 2.2.6.4 pending releasing with the fix for this. Thanks a lot for the suggestion!

  • I'm a proffesional photographer and find many of my pictures on this site. Without my content. I did NOT give permission to this. Please remove them as soon as possible.

By Blogger Maartje, At April 3, 2008 4:03 AM

  • Maartje, please let me know how to identify your picture. Like the url, your name, etc. We will remove it ASAP.

By Blogger Chris, At April 3, 2008 8:04 AM

  • This might be off topic, but i do not know where to post it.

i was yesterday looking the beautiful photos of foxsaver in the web pages, not in my cache, and decided to copy some of them to my photo folder. When i viewed them with Vista viewer, they were poorly pixeled (20K weight or so) and of a very bad quality, while
i had seen them on line with a remarkable quality. When seen with foxsaver the quality is really bad too. Is that because i copied them to my photo folder and the photos where corrupted in the process?

I will have now to delete them one by one (the bad ones).

What must i do so that this doesn´t
happen again and still be able to keep in my own folder those i like most?

Thanks a lot if any good answer.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At June 1, 2008 8:18 PM

  • hi, Anonymous, the pictures come from the original site directly. You can visit their site and download to your own folder.

FoxSaver is only a place for users to share their findings.

By Blogger Chris, At June 1, 2008 8:32 PM

  • Hey!

I dont know what I'm doing wrong but the rss feature just doesnt work here. It keep popping the random pictures from... hell i dont know where thoses pictures are coming from. The box next to the checkbox that says "media rss urls" acts kinda weird as it splits lines when it sees a slash "/"... so if the rss feed is http://something/somewhere/whatever, the box will show:
    http://something
    /somewhere
    /whatever

Then again, I think you should leave the option not to have the randomly picked pictures, altho some are very nice and all, it just should be an option imo.

If I can find a way to get the rss work, I guess imma use that FoxSaver. The software/plugin itself is a great idea. Good job.

  • I really like this add-on, but is there any way to put in some kind of URL that would enable streaming animation screen saver like the Windows 3D Pipes screen saver.

I work with two computer screens frequently. One with a firefox window open and one with Word/Excel ect. Since I'm active on one the other just sits there burning.

A streaming animation type screen saver would be less distracting than the a cycle of photos. Just a polite inquiry. If there's any way that feature could be added, it would be great.

By Blogger Aaron, At November 29, 2008 6:46 AM

  • Hi there,

I'm using Fox Saver to display my flickr rss photos. Its exactly what I needed - so thank you very much! Its amazing that Flickr has been around for so long now yet there still aren't really any decent screensavers to support it.

Anyway here are my 'feature requests'. If implemented well I might just be prepared to pay for Foxsaver ;)

    1. Ability to remove all the buttons - ie just show the photos
    2. like on a mac screensaver the choice to have a pan effect. If done well this can look stunning. It would be worth checking out the Mac OSX one and model it on that. (ie for direction of movement. %zoom etc)
    3. Also on the Mac one for portrait pics I think it might zoom in so that there are no spaces at the side.

Thanks for all your hard work on this and keep up the effort!

    Al
